During 2006 my favorite activity was to get drunk with my friends and record songs with a few simple criteria: it must be an original composition, it must have been written and recorded (this does not include mixing) in under an hour, and it should hopefully be funny. My friends probably got very bored of this, but they helped me make these awful songs. I originally wanted to release a compilation with each song being performed by an imaginary band. That didn’t really pan out, so I’ve put the tracks here for you to cringe at.

jeremy, my old friend from Roe City (read: Monroe, LA), has just put up a compilation of a bunch of the musical work he did in 2005 with various jerks from monroe. appearances from great folks such as marcus robin, dave goss, kevin roberts (of stadanko bros. fame), jesse wingard, josh barnes, and even bill dunn grace this wonderful compilation.

i suggest you check it out and laugh heartily.

I’m defending my thesis tomorrow. But, that’s not why I’m posting here. I’m just procrastinating on preparing. Like when I put a guitar strap on my mixer. Not really sure why I did it, but it seemed like something important at the time. I made a recording of a little improv i did with my latest setup with the new strap.

unknown unknowns – strapped live

So, I’m listening to Art for Spastics like I usually do on Tuesday. Last night’s episode was 9/11 themed. Tried to play WoW, because Tuesday morning is when the servers are put back online after their weekly maintenance, but it’s down today for hardware upgrades. That’s probably a good thing for me. Anyway, I heard this song that featured lots of those computer generated voices, which I thought was so hilarious I’d share it with the rest of the Ill Op crew.

The track is “Let’s Roll” off the album Tourrorists! by Porest, released this year by Abduction. You can hear the whole episode of Art for Spastics at the website, but I went ahead and made an mp3 of just that track. Sorry about the crappy sound quality. From radio to mp3 to my crappy soundcard to another, even shittier quality mp3…well you get the point.

[EDIT: I’m sure Art for Spastics, like any internet radio, is sent from the mixer to a computer, not from a radio to a computer. wtf was i thinking?]

well, even though i’ve got a horrible stomach ache from some ramen, i recorded a song for the hell of it so that we might kick off some kind of internet band. an internet band? would our groupies be hot or not? the song is in the worst possible bitrate because i don’t care right now and i want the file to be small anyway. call it lo-fi on purpose. i just threw it together in a few minutes anyway just to see what i could do. our real shit would of course be better.

anyway, i’m also figuring out how to embed mp3s as a popup. so, if this works then you should be able to listen to the track in a popup window.

i found some old tracks that Lucas and I recorded in his old apartment. Ah, the glory days.

This, I think, is our crowning achievement, under the Meme-a-Saurus name, a track called “Eat Glass, Fuck Cats”.

Meme-a-Saurus – Eat Glass, Fuck Cats

Also recorded during that time is another “Jam Session” as Nineteen-Ninety Nerds.

Nineteen-Ninety Nerds – Jam Session, Nov 8 2005

And finally, from the obscure, lost pages of New Orleans music
history comes the crowning achievement of my rock and roll high school
career, a microcassette I found and “remastered” of a practice session
of a band I was in called The Oars. Recorded some time during
the late 90s, it’s got some Sonic Youth covers in there and some
Dinosaur Jr. and Nirvana worked in of course, none of it really
sounding like the original because our amps were turned up louder than
a microcasette recorder can handle. But I think you’ll like the
original music (such as my personal fave “Disorient Express,” about a
third of way through the recording) just as much as the covers.:

The Oars – Found Microcassette

Enjoy!

[edit: i must really like the phrase “crowning achievement” even
though now that i think about it, it’s ridiculous and makes no sense.]

[another edit: you can also check out my most recent musicalesque recordings here at The Partial Objects].

so, i’m starting a new one man musical project. yes, i am multitalented. the name, zombie argument, comes from the …well, why spoil it. it means whatever you want. look it up if you’re that interested. what am i, your personal search engine? get out of my face!

the name of the track arbitrarily comes from an item i just picked up in world of warcraft. why is the name of the song arbitrary? because it was really me just testing shit out. believe me, i can do much better. but do i have the ambition? not really. why a world of warcraft item? why not. it’s fresh on my mind and…i’m an artist dammit. i don’t have to explain myself!

zombie argument’s influences include: dirty south rap producers, the melvins, deltron 3030, lightning bolt, cough syrup, and your mom.
